In part, most of the items you can expect to find in a pool are only so durable to just the sun and UV rays over time. Let’s face it, at the end of the day there is only so much you can do to extend the lifetime of your product in question. Mix in the erosion from water, the constant change in chemical composition and chemical exposure as well as use and it starts to come into a clearer picture. All of these things combined take a toll on equipment.

How can you help alleviate these effects on your equipment?

For starters, checking and maintaining proper pool chemistry is a must, as well as working to keep the body of water as clean as possible while not adding excessive amounts of shock, acid, or other deteritative chemicals common in pool use and maintenance. That means removing any unneeded items from the pool prior to shocking or adding those excess chemicals including a pool cleaner or float.

High pH Exposure can Deteriorate Cleaner Parts

A huge part of the deterioration of cleaner parts is the simple fact that they are exposed to high pH and constant stress from the shock or chlorine treatments. While normal chlorine exposure is fine, excessive or drawn out exposure will have a noticeable effect both physically and chemically. Chlorinated water does a good job of sanitizing the pool and equipment. So well in fact it literally eats away at and pits small holes or brittle textures in brick, concrete, pebble tec, ect. That same treatment is certainly present with lesser strength materials like plastic or rubber. With that being said, most of the equipment you’ll expect to see is engineered with this in mind, and the manufacturers usually use a high quality material to try and counteract this.

Replace Pool Parts in Pairs

Secondly, any wearable items you plan to replace should be replaced in pairs like you would brakes, tires, windshield wipers, ect. In our instance you’re talking about O-rings, seals, diaphragms, cleaner tires and more. Like we all know, nothing is going to last forever no matter how well it is maintained, but having a little extra say and sway in the maintenance and upkeep of your equipment can lead to longer use and additional savings.
