What is a Pool and Spa Heater?
For those of you who don’t know what a pool heater is and how a pool heater works, this blog will help explain. The pool heater is responsible for warming your water so you can enjoy your pool and or spa in the off-season and the evenings. There are three types of heaters available for your pool and or spa: natural gas, propane, and electric. Each functions a bit differently and is suited for a wide range of pool owners.
When talking about gas heaters, are commonly known as a popular choice for pool and or spa owners because of how quickly they can heat the water. The waiting time to enjoy the warmer water is virtually nonexistent because of the high output they can provide (when referring to the spa as a pool will require a little bit of wait time). These heaters also are available in either natural gas or propane.
Propane on the other hand will need a separate propane tank whereas natural gas needs only a connection line for fuel. These products do not rely on outside weather sources to heat your water making them a real viable option for most pool owners.
There is also another option when it comes to these products known as an electric heater which does use the temperature from the outside air to warm the water. The warmer air is drawn into the heater and then transferred through a heat exchanger to warm the swimming water. These heaters are ideal for spa owners in a warmer climate that’s above 40 degrees Fahrenheit
What are the benefits of converting from natural gas to propane?
If you're thinking about or in the market for converting your home’s fuel source from natural gas to propane, it can be a huge decision. There are of course pros and cons to each of their own but they are popular fuel sources. Both are efficient, clean-burning sources of consistent heat but the cost can vary based on your location and regular shifts in natural resource prices. But when you consider all these factors, propane does prove to be more of a winner. Each unit of propane contains twice as much energy per unit as natural gas, so you only need about half as much propane as natural gas to achieve the same level of heating.
When comparing energy costs, it is important to be aware that you will need about half the amount of propane to heat to the same extent as natural gas. Therefore, the cost efficiency is roughly equal when the propane price for the same volume is about double the natural gas price. If the propane price is less than double, propane is more cost-effective and if propane costs more than double natural gas, natural gas is more efficient. Even when prices fluctuate, propane has one big advantage. With propane, you have a tank and can try to time your purchases when prices are low and find the best providers to fill it.
With natural gas, you’re locked into the pricing of the utility company that owns your gas lines. It’s critical to install a tank big enough to hold several thousand cubic feet of propane on your property. Many people prefer to bury it under their yard to preserve their home’s appearance. This may require digging up your grass but this isn’t permanent and your yard should grow back to normal.
The ETi 400 heater is factory-configured for use with Natural Gas. For applications using Propane Gas, this conversion kit is required.
