How To Clean D.E. Filters

The Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) filter is known for its superior ability to trap small particles and keep your water crystal clear, a D.E. filter requires regular cleaning to operate efficiently. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to clean your D.E. pool filter effectively.

Understanding D.E. Filters

D.E. filters work by using a fine powder made from the fossilized remains of tiny, aquatic organisms called diatoms. When the filter is running, the D.E. powder coats a grid inside the filter, creating a surface that traps dirt, debris, and even some bacteria. However, over time, the D.E. can become clogged with contaminants, necessitating a thorough cleaning.

When to Clean Your D.E. Filter

Typically, you should clean your D.E. filter when the pressure gauge reads 8-10 psi above the normal operating pressure. For many pools, this means cleaning every 4-6 weeks during the swimming season, but always refer to your specific filter's guidelines.

Step-by-Step Cleaning Process

  1. Gather Your Supplies Before you begin, gather the necessary supplies:
  • A garden hose
  • Gloves
  • A bucket
  • A D.E. filter-cleaning solution
  • New D.E. powder for recharging
  1. Before starting any maintenance, turn off the pool pump and switch off the power supply to prevent any accidents.
  1. Remove the Filter Assembly Open the filter’s multiport valve to the "backwash" setting to relieve any pressure in the system. Next, remove the filter cover and take out the D.E. grids. Handle them carefully, as they can be fragile and make sure you are wearing gloves.
  1. Rinse the D.E. Grids Using your garden hose, rinse each grid thoroughly to remove debris and dirt. Make sure to clean between the grids, as buildup can occur in those spaces. If you’re using a D.E. cleaning solution, follow the manufacturer's instructions for soaking the grids to remove stubborn contaminants.
  1. Inspect the grids for any tears or damage. If you find any holes or significant wear, you may need to replace the grids to maintain optimal filtration.
  1. Reassemble the Filter Once the grids are clean and inspected, reinsert them back into the filter housing. Make sure they’re securely positioned to avoid any leaks.
  1. Recharge the Filter with D.E. Powder Before restarting the pump, you’ll need to recharge the filter with fresh D.E. powder. The amount will depend on your specific filter model—check the manufacturer’s guidelines. Typically, you’ll mix the D.E. powder with water in a bucket and pour it into the skimmer while the pump is running. This allows the new D.E. to coat the grids evenly.
  1. Restart the Pump With everything reassembled and the D.E. powder added, close the multiport valve and turn the pump back on. Check for any leaks and ensure the pressure returns to its normal range.

Cleaning your D.E. pool filter is a straightforward but essential task that will keep your pool water clear and safe for swimming. By following these steps regularly, you’ll not only extend the life of your filter but also enhance the overall efficiency of your pool’s filtration system. A clean pool is a happy pool—so get started on that maintenance, and enjoy your sparkling oasis!
